A new study published in Nature Medicine has found strong evidence that there is no safe amount of processed meat consumption, and sugary-sweetened beverages can also increase the risk of major diseases such as type 2 diabetes, colorectal cancer, and heart disease.
Researchers analyzed data from over 60 previous studies on the relationship between diet and disease risk. The study found that consuming even small amounts of processed meat, sugary drinks, and trans fatty acids increases the risk of developing these conditions. People who ate one hot dog per day had an 11% greater risk of type 2 diabetes, while drinking a daily soda equivalent was associated with an 8% increase in diabetes risk.
The study suggests that avoiding or minimizing consumption of processed meat, sugar-sweetened beverages, and trans fatty acids is the best approach to achieve health gains. There is no “safe amount” of processed meat consumption, and the risk increases as consumption increases.
Experts say that reducing consumption of these foods can help lower disease risk, but it’s essential to maintain a balanced diet with plenty of fruits, vegetables, whole grains, legumes, nuts, and fermented dairy products.
“The goal shouldn’t be perfection, but rather a healthy and sensible dietary pattern that allows room for enjoyment,” said Dr. Gunter Kuhnle. “Food is not just a source of nutrients, it plays a central role in culture, pleasure, family life, and social connection.”
