Dark matter, a hypothetical substance that outweighs regular matter by five to one, remains one of the universe’s greatest mysteries. Despite extensive astrophysical observations, its existence has not been confirmed, and our understanding of gravity is still uncertain.
Professor Stefano Profumo from the University of California, Santa Cruz, has proposed two alternative theories to explain dark matter’s origin. The first theory suggests that dark matter arises from the expansion of the universe. According to this idea, a third moment of acceleration occurred after the Big Bang, creating a cosmic horizon that radiates particles into space.
The second theory proposes the existence of a “dark sector,” where dark quarks and gluons are invisible to us but interact with their dark counterparts. These particles could form primordial black holes and be extremely stable, making them a possible candidate for dark matter.
While both theories are highly speculative, Profumo’s work offers testable predictions and challenges conventional particle dark matter models. His studies, published in Physical Review D, provide new insights into the universe’s greatest mystery, even if they don’t replace the Standard Model of Cosmology just yet.
