Prospect Medical Holdings, the parent company of CharterCARE’s Fatima and Roger Williams hospitals in Rhode Island, has filed for Chapter 11 bankruptcy. The move comes amid financial struggles, including a $17 million debt to vendors.
Despite this filing, hospital operations remain unaffected, according to Prospect spokesperson Otis Brown. “Our hospitals, programs, and physician practices are fully operational, busy, and actively treating patients,” he said. Brown assured Rhode Islanders that they can continue to receive high-quality care across the system.
The bankruptcy announcement has sparked reactions from elected officials, including Attorney General Peter Neronha and Senator Sheldon Whitehouse. Neronha expressed confidence in Prospect’s intention to proceed with the sale of hospitals to Centurion Foundation, which has not yet been finalized. UNAP called for a plan to keep the hospitals open and operational.
State leaders have also weighed in, with Senate President Dominick Ruggerio emphasizing the importance of continuity in health services at Fatima and Roger Williams hospitals. The filing is seen as an opportunity to re-evaluate priorities in healthcare operations and ensure patient-centered care amidst potential changes in ownership.
