A performance nutritionist debunks the notion that high-protein diets are essential for everyone. According to Bethan Crouse of Loughborough University, the general population needs significantly less protein than often touted by fitness influencers. The recommended daily allowance is 0.75g of protein per kg of body weight, which is more than enough for most people’s daily needs. In fact, UK men and women consume an average of 85g and 67g protein respectively each day. Crouse warns that focusing solely on protein can lead to a lack of essential nutrients like fibre, antioxidants, and vitamins from fruits and vegetables. She recommends wholefoods over processed snacks and suggests consuming protein throughout the day, rather than in massive portions before bed or added to coffee.
