A group of protesters gathered outside a Las Vegas Target store to voice their opposition to the retailer’s decision to end its three-year diversity, equity, and inclusion initiatives. The move marks a 180-degree turn from the retailer’s goals in 2019, which included increasing promotions for people of color and spending with diverse suppliers.
Protest organizer Yasmin Salas described the change as a “slap in the face” to minorities and the LGBTQ+ community. She also expressed her decision to boycott Target, citing CVS as an alternative that promotes diversity initiatives without sacrificing affordability.
According to Target’s website, the retailer will be concluding its Racial Equity Action and Change (REACH) initiatives along with its DEI goals. The change has already sparked widespread criticism from advocates, who plan to begin boycotting Target on February 1st.
