Protesters gathered in Troy near a Tesla showroom on Sunday to voice their opposition to President Trump adviser Elon Musk’s proposed cuts to social security. The event, organized by Hank Kennedy of Hazel Park, aimed to draw attention to what protesters called “damaging” and “irresponsible” cuts.
Musk oversees the president’s cost-cutting and downsizing operation, DOGE, which has targeted key government agencies in an effort to downsize the federal government and tackle spending. Critics argue that his involvement with sensitive data raises concerns about accountability and research. Protesters held signs reading “Deport Musk,” “Stop Trump and Musk” and “DOGE is Treason.”
Many drivers supported the protesters, honking their horns and raising their fists in solidarity. Others expressed dissatisfaction with Trump’s policies, including a recent executive order that allowed Tesla to access personal data on millions of Americans. Attorney General Pam Bondi has launched an investigation into the funding behind anti-Tesla vandalism.
The backlash against Musk’s involvement with social security cuts comes as Tesla stock has shed its gains since Trump’s election. Protesters aim to “damage his wallet” by boycotting Tesla and divesting themselves of stock, in a bid to fight back peacefully. As one protester said, “I just don’t believe that when people were voting for Trump, they expected to see cuts to the National Forest Service, Social Security, the IRS.”
