Proton Unveils Lumo AI Assistant with Enhanced Privacy Features

Proton, a privacy-focused productivity tool maker, has released its AI assistant, Lumo, designed to prioritize user data protection. Lumo does not store logs of conversations, uses end-to-end encryption for chats, and features a ghost mode where messages disappear after the window is closed.

The chatbot is available via web client and mobile apps, allowing users to access it without an account. Users can upload files for analysis or connect their Proton Drive account for cloud storage access. However, Lumo’s search functionality may not provide the latest results due to its reliance on web-based access.

Proton emphasizes its focus on privacy, stating that Lumo is based on open-source models and relies solely on them for research and development without utilizing user data. The company uses zero-access encryption, also employed in other Proton products, to store conversation history, which can be decrypted on the device.

As a European-based company, Proton asserts this gives it an advantage over AI companies in the US and China when it comes to privacy. Unlike Apple Intelligence, Lumo is not affiliated with American or Chinese AI companies, ensuring users’ queries are never sent to third parties.

This marks Proton’s second foray into AI tools, following last year’s AI-powered writing assistant for its Mail product.
