Psilocybin Edibles Found to be Adulterated with Unknown Substances

Psilocybin, the active ingredient in “magic mushrooms,” has been touted for its recreational and health benefits. However, new research suggests that many edible products containing psilocybin are being sold without proper labeling or testing.

A study published in JAMA Network Open found no traces of psilocybin in 12 out of 13 edible products tested in Portland, Oregon. Four products contained no active ingredients at all. The researchers also discovered synthetic psychedelics with unknown effects on human health, which may pose a risk to consumers.

The lack of oversight in the industry has led to a surge in untested and potentially hazardous products being sold online. This “Wild West” scenario is similar to what’s happening in the weed industry, where shady companies are peddling products without proper testing or regulation.

The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) recently investigated reports of severe illness after consuming psilocybin edibles, resulting in 73 hospitalizations and potentially three deaths across 34 states. Experts warn that as usage rates increase, so will the risks from retail products.

This lack of transparency is alarming, especially when consumers are unaware of what they’re buying or ingesting. It’s essential for regulatory bodies to step in and provide stronger oversight to protect public health.
