Indie icons Pulp have announced their first new album in 24 years, titled “More”, and shared their first single in almost two decades, called “Spike Island”. The Sheffield band’s frontman Jarvis Cocker said the decision to create music again was motivated by the positive response to their 2023 reunion tour.
After a decade-long hiatus following 2001’s “We Love Life”, Pulp reformed for various festival dates in 2011 and reunited again in 2023. The new single, inspired by the infamous Stone Roses concert at Spike Island, was written after speaking with musician Jason Buckle, who shared his recollections of the event.
The album is dedicated to former bassist Steve Mackey, who passed away in 2023 at the age of 56. Cocker stated that recording without Mackey was a unique experience, but two songs on the record date from when he was still with the band, making him feel included. The album’s release coincides with Pulp’s UK tour, set to begin the day after its release in June.
Cocker also employed artificial intelligence to create the video for “Spike Island”, which animates the iconic “cardboard cut-out” figures from their biggest album, Different Class. However, he later expressed his preference for human intelligence over AI and stated that the experience had left a lasting impact on him.
