Pulp Reunite with Nostalgic and Ambitious New Single “Spike Island”

Pulp, the alt-rock band behind Britpop classics like Different Class and This Is Hardcore, has finally released their first album in 24 years. The new single, “Spike Island,” premiered on BBC Radio 6 Music and offers a nostalgic look back at the band’s past struggles with fame. Frontman Jarvis Cocker seems to be reflecting on his own comfort with success, using the infamous 1990 Stone Roses gig as a metaphor for disappointment.

“Spike Island” features a disco-influenced rhythm, syndrums, and a brief spoken-word section, echoing Pulp’s signature style. The song also showcases Cocker’s continued growth as an artist, tackling complex emotions beneath its anthemic chorus. Compared to their previous single “After You,” released in the 2010s, “Spike Island” is a stronger effort.

Fans are already reacting positively, with excited texts pouring in after the premiere. While it remains to be seen whether Pulp’s upcoming album “More” will achieve the same level of acclaim as Blur’s recent comeback single “The Narcissist,” “Spike Island” has sparked hope and anticipation for their second coming.
