Russian President Vladimir Putin has proposed a one-year informal rollover of the New START treaty’s limits on deployed strategic nuclear weapons if the US agrees to do the same. The 2010 treaty, set to expire in February, caps the size of both countries’ nuclear arsenals at 1,550 warheads and 700 delivery vehicles each. Putin said his proposal is in the interests of global non-proliferation and could help spur dialogue with Washington on arms control. However, US President Donald Trump’s response has not been made public yet, despite earlier statements from him about maintaining treaty limits.
