Russian President Vladimir Putin has proposed a summit with US President Donald Trump, who is open to meeting with both Putin and Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky. The proposal comes amid ongoing tensions over the conflict in Ukraine. According to White House officials, a meeting between Trump and Putin could take place as soon as next week.
Putin had previously proposed a leader-level summit on Ukraine but has since continued to reject US proposals for an unconditional ceasefire. Ukrainian officials see the new proposal as a diplomatic maneuver aimed at softening Trump’s stance towards Russia.
However, it is unclear whether Putin is willing to hold a trilateral summit with Trump and Zelensky. The US is expected to impose new sanctions on Russia on Friday if Putin doesn’t agree to a ceasefire by then. The sanctions will be the first since Trump took office.
Trump has been optimistic about the conflict in Ukraine, saying “great progress” had been made after a meeting with Ukrainian officials earlier this week. He also announced plans to double tariffs on India and impose new sanctions on Russia.
