Russian President Vladimir Putin has not ruled out capturing the key city of Sumy in Ukraine, despite already annexing four regions. In a speech at an economic conference in St. Petersburg, Mr. Putin stated that Russians and Ukrainians are “one people” and implied that the entire country is Russia’s to claim. The Kremlin has been seeking improved relations with the US, but Mr. Putin’s insistence on continuing the war in Ukraine has come at a diplomatic cost.
The US has expressed frustration over the lack of progress in peace talks, which have led only to prisoner exchanges and no concrete agreements. President Trump had promised to end the war 24 hours after taking office, but efforts have been hindered by deep disagreements between the countries. Meanwhile, Russian air assaults on Ukraine have intensified, dimming hopes for a cease-fire.
The Kremlin is determined to achieve its goals in Ukraine either diplomatically or militarily, despite the lack of progress. Talks with the US on restoring bilateral ties are also dragging, with no tangible movement made in terms of sanctions being lifted or American companies returning to Russia.
