Python has become the most popular language on GitHub, surpassing JavaScript. This trend reflects a growing interest in data science, artificial intelligence, and machine learning among developers. The rise of Python usage coincides with an increase in open-source activity beyond traditional software development.
GitHub’s Octoverse 2024 report, released October 29, reveals that Python is used extensively across various areas, including machine learning, data science, and scientific computing. This growth also reflects a shift towards smaller AI models requiring less computational power.
Contrary to expectations, the report found that AI is not replacing developers but rather being integrated into applications and projects on GitHub. The number of developers joining GitHub from across the globe has increased significantly.
The top 10 developer communities on GitHub remain largely unchanged, with the United States, India, China, Brazil, and other countries still prominent. However, Africa is nurturing a growing pool of developers.
In 2024, global developers made nearly 1 billion contributions to open-source projects. Furthermore, CodeQL secret scanning detected over 39 million secret leaks across GitHub, highlighting common security vulnerabilities such as injection, broken access control, insecure design, and cryptographic failures.
