Quad-Demic Hits US Winter Season

Four viruses are currently spreading rapidly across the US, experts call it a “quad-demic”. These include COVID-19, influenza, RSV, and norovirus. Data from the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention shows that all four viruses are circulating at high levels this winter.

Respiratory illnesses like the flu, COVID, and RSV tend to spread more in winter months due to cold, dry conditions and frequent indoor gatherings. However, current rates of infection are typical for this time of year, according to experts.

Influenza is currently ravaging most of the US, with many states seeing high or very high levels of flu activity. COVID and RSV are also circulating now, but at lower levels. Meanwhile, norovirus has caused more outbreaks than usual this season, with a record 91 outbreaks recorded for the week ending Dec. 5.

Experts warn that these viruses can have a huge impact on public health and healthcare systems. “The entire healthcare system can be impacted when you have high rates of all of these infections at the same time,” said Geeta Sood, an assistant professor of medicine and hospital epidemiologist at Johns Hopkins Bayview Medical Center.

To stay safe this winter, experts recommend taking precautions based on your individual risk tolerance and medical history. This includes washing your hands frequently, keeping distance from people who are ill, eating well, exercising often, and getting enough sleep. “You can run, but you can’t hide from them,” said Dr. Doron. “The best way to protect yourself is to be really healthy when you do get a cold.”
