Quad-Demic Spreads Across US as Multiple Viruses Surge

Concerns are growing over a surge in cases of influenza, RSV, COVID-19, and norovirus, leading experts to warn of a “quad-demic” spreading across the US.

While there is a vaccine for respiratory viruses such as COVID-19 and influenza, norovirus remains unvaccinated. The stomach flu-like illness can be spread through contaminated food, water, or close contact with an infected person, making hand sanitizer ineffective.

Influenza cases are currently elevated, causing 9.1 million illnesses, 110,000 hospitalizations, and 4,700 deaths in the US. Vaccination is key to preventing serious illness from the flu, with vaccines available for high-risk groups such as pregnant individuals, older adults, and those with asthma.

RSV, another respiratory virus, is also at “very high” levels, particularly among young children who often experience wheezing, mucous, and noisy breathing. An RSV vaccine is recommended for high-risk adults over 60 and infants born to unvaccinated mothers.

COVID-19, although not circulating at pandemic-era levels, has caused a slight increase in hospitalizations due to mutations in the virus. Mild cases can be treated with antivirals, while testing and self-isolation are recommended for those experiencing symptoms.

Norovirus outbreaks continue to surge, with 91 recent cases reported. Experts stress that proper hygiene practices, such as washing fruits and vegetables thoroughly and cooking shellfish at high temperatures, are crucial in preventing the spread of this highly contagious virus.
