Qualcomm Inc. has introduced a new chip designed to power personal computers capable of running the latest artificial intelligence software at an affordable price of $600. The Snapdragon X Platform, featuring an 8-core processor and dedicated AI chip, will run Microsoft Corp.’s Copilot+ software.
PC makers like Dell Technologies Inc. and Lenovo Group Ltd. plan to offer laptops based on this new product in “early 2025.” Qualcomm’s CEO Cristiano Amon aims to diversify the company’s revenue streams by expanding into the PC market, reducing its reliance on smartphone chip sales.
The new chip joins Qualcomm’s existing lineup of more powerful components, including the Snapdragon X Elite and X Plus. Its advantage lies in extended battery life, a trait it claims its chips possess due to their design for small devices. In contrast, rival processor-based machines have to throttle back power when unplugged, according to Intel’s recent announcement.
