A federal jury in Delaware has ruled that Qualcomm did not breach its agreement with Arm after the 2021 acquisition of Nuvia, a startup founded by three former Apple engineers. The decision marks the end of a two-year-long legal battle between the two companies.
Arm had accused Qualcomm of misusing chip designs licensed to Nuvia before its acquisition, claiming it could have lost $50 million in revenue as a result. However, the jury rejected this claim after reviewing Arm’s internal documents that showed the technology was not used extensively by Nuvia.
The trial revealed that Qualcomm projected significant savings on royalty payments to Arm, which could reach up to $1.4 billion per year. Nuvia co-founder Gerard Williams testified that his company only utilized a small percentage of the licensed technology in its final products.
The jury’s verdict is seen as a victory for Qualcomm, with the company set to continue developing high-performance CPUs that benefit consumers worldwide. The outcome leaves room for another trial to determine whether Nuvia breached its agreement with Arm.
