Despite growing interest, practical uses for quantum computers remain elusive. “Some 10 years ago, it was not obvious that quantum computing was more than an interesting lab experiment,” says Laurent Prost at French start-up Alice & Bob. Today, a global ecosystem has emerged, with hundreds of firms in the sector. Microsoft’s Krysta Svore succinctly notes: “Quantum computers are working.” However, the industry still struggles to unlock its full potential, with no clear indication of when long-promised practical applications will materialize.
