Quartz countertops, popular in high-end kitchens, have been linked to a growing number of cases of lung disease called silicosis. Marek Marzec, a 48-year-old dad from Poland, was diagnosed with the condition after over a decade working for engineered stone manufacturers in the UK.
Marzec described “appalling” work conditions and the impact of silica dust produced by cutting quartz countertops, which can lead to silicosis. The condition is caused by inhaling tiny crystalline particles of silicon dioxide and can be deadly if left untreated.
A recent study published in JAMA Internal Medicine analyzed 52 cases of silicosis among workers in California who fabricate quartz countertops. The study found that 10 workers died and three required lung transplants, with an estimated 100,000 workers in the US potentially at risk of silicosis due to exposure to silica dust.
California is now considering banning engineered stone products following Australia’s lead last year. The state has issued regulations to protect workers from silica dust exposure but may implement further measures if there is non-compliance. Dr. Jane Fazio, a pulmonary specialist, emphasizes the need for regular medical exams and X-rays for workers exposed to high levels of silica dust.
