Singer R. Kelly was hospitalized after being given an “overdose quantity” of medication by prison staff, his lawyers claim. The 58-year-old is serving a 30-year sentence for racketeering and sex trafficking at the Federal Correctional Institute in North Carolina.
According to court filings, Kelly’s team says he was placed in solitary confinement on June 10 against his will, just before filing an emergency motion for his release. His lawyers claim that prison officials allegedly plotted to kill him by another inmate, which has led to his hospitalization.
Kelly woke up feeling faint and dizzy, experiencing black spots in his vision, and lost consciousness. Medical staff at the facility were unable to help him, so he was transported to Duke University Hospital, where he spent two days under observation.
Lawyers for Kelly say that prison officials denied him necessary surgery for an ongoing blood clot issue, putting his life at risk. However, federal prosecutors have called these claims “fanciful” and “theatrical,” accusing Kelly of being a “master manipulator.”
Kelly’s lawyers are seeking the intervention of President Donald Trump to pardon the singer, citing the alleged plot against him as an imminent threat to his life.
