R. Kelly claims that his life is in imminent danger due to the prison officials’ refusal to provide him with necessary medication. In a court filing, Kelly’s attorney stated that despite being diagnosed with blood clots after an overdose, he still hasn’t received his prescribed blood thinners. The 58-year-old singer was rushed to Duke University Hospital on June 13 after allegedly being given a near-fatal overdose of his medication while in solitary confinement at the Federal Correctional Institute in North Carolina.
Kelly’s legal team accuses prison officials of punishing him with isolation after he filed an emergency motion, and claims that his deteriorating health is caused by being administered dangerously high doses of medication. Medical staff discovered blood clots in Kelly’s legs and lungs during his hospitalization, but prison officials reportedly removed him from the hospital and returned him to the facility.
Kelly’s defense attorney has submitted a sworn statement from a terminally ill inmate who alleges that Bureau of Prisons officials had recruited them into a murder plot and offered their freedom in exchange for killing Kelly. Federal prosecutors have strongly opposed Kelly’s pleas, stating that he is a “prolific child molester” who has never taken responsibility for his crimes.
The singer is currently serving a 30-year sentence following his 2021 conviction on racketeering and sex trafficking charges in New York. His case raises concerns about the treatment of prisoners with serious health issues and the alleged involvement of prison officials in violent plots.
