Rafael Devers Sets MLB Record for Most Strikeouts in First 3 Games as DH

Boston Red Sox third baseman-turned-designated hitter Rafael Devers has broken an MLB record, striking out 10 times through the first three games of the season. The 28-year-old set the mark on Saturday, after going 0-for-12 with 9 strikeouts in his previous two games.

Devers was adamant about playing third base before the Red Sox acquired Alex Bregman to fill that role. However, he agreed to switch positions as part of the deal. A three-time All-Star and senior member of the Red Sox clubhouse, Devers has spent eight seasons with the team.

The move comes after a spring training where Devers told reporters through an interpreter that he felt strongly about playing third base. The Red Sox made the decision to move Bregman in front of him.

Devers’ 10 strikeouts now stand as the most in MLB history through three games, surpassing previous records. His struggles at the plate are a far cry from his typical performance, and it raises questions whether the switch to designated hitter is affecting his play.
