The University of Hawai’i men’s volleyball team suffered its first conference loss of the season, falling to No. 9 Cal State Northridge in straight sets on Friday at Premier America Credit Union Arena. The fifth-ranked Rainbow Warriors (21-3, 4-1 BWC) were dominated by the Matadors, losing 25-17, 25-20, and 25-20.
Kristian Titriyski led UH with 14 kills, but no other Warrior had more than five kills. The team struggled with its accuracy, hitting just .045 in Set 1 and .219 for the match. In contrast, CSUN hit a season-high .507 for the match.
Jalen Phillips led the Matadors with 16 kills, hitting .414, while Joao Avila added 10 kills, hitting .692. The Matadors also had 9.5 blocks in the first two sets, leading to their 3-0 sweep of UH.
The Warriors struggled to keep up with CSUN’s powerful offense, losing for the first time on the road this season and their first sweep of the season as well. The teams will meet again on Saturday at 6:00 p.m. PT (3:00 p.m. HT) in the second Big West match.
