A rare black moon is set to appear in Michigan skies on August 23, offering prime stargazing opportunities. This phenomenon occurs once every 33 months and is the third of four new moons in a season. Since it’s a new moon, it will be invisible to the naked eye.
However, this event provides an excellent chance to enjoy clear views of the stars above, weather permitting. The term “black moon” comes from its invisibility, as per the Old Farmer’s Almanac.
While the black moon itself won’t be visible, it sets the stage for future celestial events. The next monthly black moon is scheduled for August 31, 2027, and the next seasonal black moon for August 20, 2028.
