Rare Black Moon to Rise Over Oregon on Aug. 22-23

A rare black moon will pass over Oregon between August 22 and 23, creating a darker-than-usual sky. This phenomenon occurs approximately every 33 months when three new moons are followed by a fourth new moon.

When a black moon rises, its sunlit side faces away from Earth, allowing the dark skies of Oregon to appear even darker. As a result, it’s easier to spot stars and planets in the night sky.

Here’s what you need to know:

* A black moon is created when two new moons occur during the same month or when four new moons occur, resulting in a third new moon.
* The next occurrence of a black moon will be on August 31, 2027.
* Oregon’s clear skies are expected, with mostly cloud-free conditions in most parts of the state.
