Rare Blood Moon Lunar Eclipse Coming in March

A total lunar eclipse, the first since 2022, is set to occur in March and will bring a reddish-orange tint to the Moon. The event, which has been dubbed a “Blood Moon,” occurs when the Moon aligns with the Earth and Sun, casting its shadow on our planet.

According to NASA, during a total lunar eclipse, the entire Moon falls within the darkest part of the Earth’s shadow, known as the umbra. This alignment causes the Moon to appear red-orange due to sunlight filtering through the atmosphere on its way to the lunar surface.

The phenomenon occurs when any sunlight not blocked by the Earth is filtered through the atmosphere and projected onto the Moon, giving it a reddish hue similar to sunrises and sunsets. The phase of totality, where the entire Moon is in the umbra’s shadow, will last for just over an hour before the Moon begins to emerge.

NASA has shared a video that shows what viewers can expect to see on March 13-14 if skies are clear. This rare opportunity will provide a unique viewing experience for those who can witness it.
