Rare Celestial Event to Unite Six Planets in the Sky

A rare astronomical phenomenon known as a “planetary parade” will be visible in the sky this week, with six planets lining up in what NASA calls a “large” alignment.

The best viewing time is between 5pm and 9pm on January 18 or from just after sunset on January 21. During these times, four of the planets – Mars, Jupiter, Saturn, and Venus – will be visible to the naked eye, while those with a telescope will see Neptune and Uranus join the display.

Planetary alignment refers to when planets gather closely on one side of the Sun at the same time. Although they are always aligned in their orbits, seeing four or five planets together is rare. A “large” alignment, like this one, occurs only once every few years.

Mars will be at its brightest and largest for over two years as it reaches opposition on January 16, and a conjunction between Venus and Saturn will occur on January 17-18.
