Rare Celestial Sighting in UK Skies on New Year’s Eve

A rare sight was spotted by stargazers on Friday night as Venus appeared beside a crescent moon. The planet was visible with the naked eye, despite some initial mistaking it for a bright star. This unusual celestial event is just one of several impressive sightings to be expected in January.

The Quadrantid meteor shower will reach its peak this weekend and remain visible until January 12. On January 16, Mars will be in opposition, making it easier to spot. Later, on January 21, five planets – Saturn, Venus, Uranus, Jupiter, and Mars – can be seen in the night sky after 9pm.

However, seeing Uranus requires a telescope or extremely dark skies. To fully appreciate these celestial events, stargazers should find a location away from light pollution and allow at least 15 minutes for their eyes to adjust to the darkness.
