A remarkable set of 76 million-year-old footprints discovered at Alberta’s Dinosaur Provincial Park has provided conclusive evidence of mixed-species herding behavior among dinosaurs. The “Skyline Tracksite” reveals several species, including ceratopsians and ankylosaurs, walking side by side, while two large tyrannosaurs appear to be stalking the group.
Researchers excavated 29 square meters of rock surface, uncovering 13 ceratopsian footprints from at least five animals. An ankylosaurid was found moving within the ceratopsian group, and a single footprint of a small meat-eating dinosaur also appeared.
The discovery is significant, as it challenges previous assumptions about dinosaur behavior. Co-author Dr Phil Bell notes that finding footprints in Dinosaur Provincial Park has long been rare, making this find even more remarkable.
