A rare celestial event is set to take place on Friday, May 23 and Saturday, May 24, 2025. On these mornings, a delicate crescent moon will be visible low on the horizon, flanked by three planets: Venus, Saturn, and Neptune.
The event is only visible for a short time before sunrise and requires viewers to rise early to witness it. The timing of the parade is approximately 45 minutes before sunrise due east.
On May 23, a 20%-lit waning crescent moon will be positioned between Venus and Saturn. Meanwhile, on May 24, a 13%-lit waning crescent moon will be visible near Venus, closer to the horizon.
Venus is expected to be the brightest of the three planets, shining at -4.3 magnitude, which is 158 times brighter than Saturn. Neptune can also be spotted with binoculars or a small telescope, despite its low visibility.
However, the true highlight of this event is the “Earthshine” phenomenon on the crescent moon. This ethereal sight is caused by sunlight reflected off Earth’s ice, oceans, and clouds onto the moon, creating an otherworldly glow.
