Rare Planetary Parade: Watch 7 Planets Align Online Today

A rare “planetary parade” is happening today, February 28, where seven planets will line up across the sky. The alignment can be watched live online starting at 12:00 p.m. ET, courtesy of the Virtual Telescope Project in Italy.

The planets Mercury, Venus, Mars, Jupiter, Saturn, Uranus, and Neptune will align in the night sky just after dusk. Most of the planets can be seen with the naked eye, but a telescope is necessary to see Uranus and Neptune, which appear dimmer due to their distance from Earth.

Astrophysicist Gianluca Masi of the Virtual Telescope Project will stream live telescope views of all seven planets starting at 12:00 p.m. ET. The event can also be viewed on Space.com, the Virtual Telescope Project’s WebTV page, or YouTube channel.

This rare alignment occurs when the planets orbit the sun in a relatively flat disk-shaped plane, making it visible to observers on Earth. The next such alignment won’t happen until 2040.

To witness the planetary parade, find a spot with minimal light pollution and watch for the seven planets as they appear in view shortly after sunset.
