A rare case of human death from rabies has been reported in Northern Kentucky. The victim, who hasn’t been identified, received medical treatment in Kentucky and Ohio before passing away. The source of their exposure is unknown, but officials suspect it may have occurred during international travel. Health officials stress that human-to-human transmission of rabies is rare, but they’re working to identify those who may have come into contact with the individual.
Rabies is usually spread through bites or scratches from infected animals, as well as contaminated saliva or mucus entering the eyes or mouth. Bats and skunks are the most common carriers in Kentucky. Dr. Steven Stack, commissioner of the Kentucky Department for Public Health, warns that untreated rabies can be fatal.
The Kentucky Department for Public Health, Northern Kentucky Health Department, Ohio Department for Health, and Centers for Disease Control and Prevention are investigating the case. If you suspect you’ve been bitten or scratched by a wild animal, contact a healthcare provider immediately.
