Rare RTX 50-Series GPU Issue Affects Only Half a Percent of Units

Nvidia has confirmed a rare issue affecting less than half a percent (0.5%) of its GeForce RTX 5090 and 5070 Ti GPUs, which have fewer render output units (ROPs) than specified.

The problem was discovered by TechPowerUp and affects Zotac, MSI, Gigabyte, and Nvidia’s own RTX 5090 Founders Edition GPUs, with some models listed to have only 168 ROPs instead of the expected 176. This results in a performance loss of around 4-5%.

Nvidia says the issue stems from production and quality control problems. Affected users are advised to contact the manufacturers for an RMA (Return Merchandise Authorization) to send back the faulty GPU.

This rare issue is part of a broader problem with the RTX 50-series, which has seen several issues emerge since its release in January. These include melting 12VHPWR cables and reports of some GPUs catching on fire while in use.

Despite high demand for the new GPUs, Nvidia is working to address the scarcity issue by offering Verified Priority Access for select customers who want to purchase a GeForce RTX 5090 or RTX 5080 Founders Edition GPU directly from the company.
