Rare Strawberry Moon Appears Over Global Landmarks

The full moon, also known as the Strawberry Moon, rose over several global landmarks on June 10-11, 2025. This rare celestial phenomenon is visible when strawberries are fully ripe, according to traditional Algonquin tribes in the northeastern US. The name ‘Strawberry Moon’ originates from this tradition and has been used by other Native American tribes like the Cherokee.

Photos of the event show the moon rising over iconic locations such as Liverpool, England, Athens, Greece, New York City, Sydney, Australia, and others. The full moon was unusually low in the sky, resembling its position 18 years ago due to its proximity to Earth.

This year’s Strawberry Moon was about 14% larger and 30% brighter than usual, making it a rare sight for stargazers. People around the world gathered to witness this event, including couples watching from beaches in Melbourne and Duhok, Iraq. The moon signaled the time of strawberry harvesting, adding to its cultural significance.
