Rare Tick-Borne Disease Spotted on Martha’s Vineyard

Public health officials have launched an investigation into a possible case of Powassan virus, a rare and serious tick-borne disease that has been increasing in cases over recent years. The potential case comes during a severe tick season in New England, with multiple cases reported in Massachusetts this year.

Powassan virus is spread through the bite of an infected tick and can be transmitted quickly – within 15 minutes. Initial symptoms include fever, headache, and vomiting, while severe cases can cause brain swelling, seizures, and long-term neurological complications. Notably, only one previous case has been reported on Martha’s Vineyard in the past 20 years.

The surge in tick-borne diseases is attributed to a worst tick season in New England in years. Massachusetts has seen three confirmed cases this year alone, raising concerns among officials about potential outbreaks and the need for increased vigilance.
