Baltimore Ravens General Manager Eric DeCosta has defended the team’s selection of Marshall edge rusher Mike Green in the second round of the NFL draft, despite two sexual assault allegations in his past. Green was selected with the 59th overall pick after a thorough investigation by the team.
The allegations, which surfaced during the combine in February, saw Green claim he was accused of sexual assault at Virginia and faced another allegation in high school. However, he maintained his innocence throughout.
DeCosta acknowledged the severity of the allegations but stated that the team had done their due diligence. He met with Green for 90 minutes and spoke to people at both Virginia and Marshall to gather more information.
“We’re comfortable with Mike,” DeCosta said. “We think the best is yet to come from him.” The Ravens’ scouts deemed Green a top prospect, despite being rated as the 18th-best by ESPN’s Mel Kiper Jr.
The team’s decision comes after the NFL is currently investigating kicker Justin Tucker for sexual misconduct. However, DeCosta insisted that they looked at each case individually and did their homework before making the selection.
