A California-based pet food company, Savage Pet, has recalled its raw chicken products after two cats in New York City died from bird flu infections linked to the contaminated food. The recall comes amid a recent surge in reports of cat deaths and illnesses in several states due to the Type A H5N1 influenza virus.
The recalled products were distributed in California, Colorado, New York, Pennsylvania, and Washington state, and are stamped with a specific lot code and best-by date. Health officials in New York City have warned consumers to avoid Savage Pet products due to the cat illnesses.
This is not the first recent recall tied to contaminated raw pet food. Wild Coast Raw of Oregon recalled its frozen boneless raw chicken cat food after it was linked to illnesses and deaths in cats in Oregon and Washington, while Morasch Meats of Portland, Oregon, recalled its Northwest Naturals brand of raw and frozen turkey pet food.
Veterinarian Dr. Jarra Jagne warns that feeding animals unpasteurized milk or raw pet food can pose a risk of bird flu as well as other germs like salmonella, listeria, and E. coli.
