A recall has been issued for two types of raw pet food sold in Oregon and Washington after two indoor cats died from bird flu. The affected products are Wild Coast Pet Foods’ Boneless Free Range Chicken Formula, specifically Lot #22660 and #22664 with a best-buy date of December 2025.
The birds were exposed to highly pathogenic avian influenza (HPAI), which was also found in the food samples. The company is advising customers to cook their chicken formula until it reaches an internal temperature of 165°F (74°C) or replace it with a non-poultry formula. Wild Coast Pet Foods sells its products at retail stores throughout Washington and Oregon, with plans to expand to California.
Cats are particularly sensitive to bird flu, while dogs can contract HPAI but usually exhibit mild symptoms. The US Food and Drug Administration (FDA) has reported several cases of cats dying from HPAI after consuming unpasteurized milk or raw meats. To protect pets, the Oregon Department of Agriculture recommends avoiding undercooked meat, raw milk, and feeding birds.
Symptoms of HPAI in cats include fever, lethargy, low appetite, eye discharge, and difficulty breathing. If your pet has consumed the recalled product and shows these symptoms, contact your veterinarian immediately. The recall is not the first of its kind for Wild Coast Pet Foods, which previously issued a recall in December 2024 after a cat died from bird flu in Oregon.
