A recent outbreak of highly pathogenic avian influenza (HPAI, more specifically avian influenza type A H5N1) in dairy cattle has also affected domestic cats, with dozens confirmed cases reported since March 2024. The virus can be transmitted through poultry or wild bird exposure.
A new source of infection has emerged: raw diets containing poultry contaminated with the virus. Northwest Naturals issued a voluntary recall of its Feline Turkey Recipe raw frozen pet food after it tested positive for H5N1 in December. Affected products were distributed in multiple states and Canada, with at least one cat dying after consuming the contaminated food.
Veterinarians have confirmed a genetic match between the virus in the contaminated pet food and the infected cat, indicating transmission through contact with the raw product. Experts warn of the importance of proper hygiene when handling raw pet food and taking precautions to protect themselves and others from the virus.
Symptoms of H5N1 in cats include fever, lethargy, eye and nose discharge, respiratory distress, and neurological issues. Preventative measures, such as keeping pets indoors, limiting contact with sick animals, and avoiding undercooked meat products, are crucial to reducing the risk of transmission.
