Rays Seek Permanent Home After 19 Years of Ownership

St. Petersburg’s journey toward a permanent home for the Tampa Bay Rays began 19 years ago. The team’s principal owner, Stuart Sternberg, took over after Vince Naimoli in 2004. However, construction on a new stadium has been elusive due to various factors.

The issue dates back further, with six local politicians voting in favor of building a domed stadium in 1984. Despite the initial enthusiasm, the project never materialized. In recent years, the team has been exploring alternatives, including temporary solutions and potential relocation to other cities.

Mayor Ken Welch’s administration has been instrumental in reviving discussions on a new stadium, but a solution remains elusive. The Rays’ future remains uncertain as they continue to search for a permanent home.
