Rays’ Wander Franco to Learn Verdict in Trial Thursday

A verdict will be announced Thursday in the trial of Rays shortstop Wander Franco, who faces charges of sexual abuse. The presiding judge said closing arguments were concluded on Monday, following a complex case involving allegations against Franco. Prosecutors are seeking a five-year prison sentence.

Franco’s career and contract could be impacted by the verdict, which is expected to be announced Thursday at 3 p.m. He has been on Major League Baseball’s restricted list since charges were filed in July 2024.

The trial began after prosecutors filed evidence, including direct testimony from a minor, which was reviewed by a judge. Franco denied involvement but was found guilty of proceeding to a trial.

Franco faces additional charges in the Dominican Republic for illegal possession of a firearm, with potential jail terms ranging from six months to five years. The outcome could determine Franco’s future in baseball and his financial situation, as he has an 11-year contract worth $182 million remaining.
