R&B Legend Jerry Butler Dies at 85

Jerry Butler, the iconic R&B singer known as “The Iceman,” has died at the age of 85. A longtime Chicago politician and Rock and Roll Hall of Fame inductee, Butler was a key figure in the city’s music scene for decades.

Born in Mississippi, Butler rose to fame with his group the Impressions in the late 1950s, scoring a Top 100 hit with “For Your Precious Love” in 1958. The song would later be included on Rolling Stone’s list of the greatest songs of all time. After leaving the group, Butler launched a successful solo career, releasing numerous R&B hits throughout the Sixties.

As his music career slowed in the Seventies, Butler transitioned to politics, serving on the Cook County Board of Commissioners from 1986 to 2018. During his tenure, he continued to perform live and released music, including a solo album in 1992.

Butler’s niece confirmed his passing, saying he would be deeply missed by the community. Songwriters Kenny Gamble and Leon Huff described him as “a one of a kind music legend” who left behind a lasting legacy.
