Rebels on the Move in Congo While Leaders Talk
The Democratic Republic of Congo’s fragile peace process hit a snag as rebel groups continue their relentless march across the country, seizing key territories and undermining the government’s authority. Meanwhile, talks between President FĂ©lix Tshisekedi and Rwandan counterpart Paul Kagame remain stalled, with both leaders refusing to meet face-to-face for over six months.
Qatar’s Emir played host to the two leaders in a last-ditch effort to revive the stalled peace process, but it appears to have yielded little progress. The rebels, who have been waging a low-intensity insurgency against the government since 2021, are taking advantage of the lack of action to expand their control.
The DRC’s eastern regions, long plagued by instability and poverty, are now firmly under rebel control, with the groups having made significant gains in recent weeks. This has raised concerns among international observers that the conflict could spiral out of control, posing a major threat to regional stability.
