Record $126 Billion Natural Disaster Losses Hit US Economy This Year

US natural disasters, including wildfires, tornadoes, and floods, have cost the economy a record $126 billion in losses during the first half of 2025. The damage is triple the annual average over the past 25 years. Climate change is being blamed for the extreme weather conditions.

The total US loss does not include floods that occurred in Texas earlier this year. Worldwide, there were $162 billion in natural disaster losses during the same period, above the annual average of $141 billion. Significant disasters include a drought in Brazil, windstorms in Europe, and an earthquake in Myanmar.

Looking ahead, forecasts predict 15 tropical storms and eight hurricanes this autumn, which is above average. The record losses have caused over 100 fatalities across America. Insurance broker Aon reports that it views all disasters with at least $25 million in losses to be significant.
