The Dominican Republic has made its largest cocaine seizure ever, with authorities confiscating nearly 9.5 tons of the illicit substance worth $250 million. The shipment, containing the drugs, was found hidden inside a banana import at the Caucedo port in Santo Domingo. Ten suspects have been detained in connection to the incident.
This massive seizure marks a new record for the country and follows recent trends of increased anti-drug efforts. With this latest confiscation, authorities have seized over 47 tons of drugs so far this year. The second-largest cocaine shipment was discovered at Caucedo port in 2006, containing more than 2,580 kilograms.
The Dominican Republic has long been considered a major transit point for illicit substances. This record-breaking seizure highlights the country’s ongoing efforts to tackle drug trafficking and smuggling.
