The latest Powerball jackpot has reached a record-breaking $750 million, making it the 10th largest ever. The estimated cash value of the prize is $338.6 million. The next drawing is Monday night, and players have just one chance to win with odds of 1 in 292.2 million.
Iowa Lottery chief executive Matt Strawn expressed excitement about the colossal jackpot, stating that “one $2 Powerball ticket can change your life.” Two tickets sold in New York and Maine matched five numbers, winning $1 million each. A third winner in South Dakota also matched five numbers, doubling their prize to $2 million.
If someone wins the jackpot, they’ll have two options: a lump sum payment of $338.6 million or periodic payments totaling $750 million. The first option would provide one large payment followed by 29 annual payments increasing by 5% every year.
Southern California has dominated Powerball winners this year, with two out of four recent wins coming from the region. The most recent jackpot winner was announced in June for a prize worth $204.5 million. The highest ever Powerball jackpots were both won in California, with one ticket valued at $2.04 billion and another at $1.765 billion.
Powerball tickets are sold in 45 states, Washington D.C., Puerto Rico, and the U.S. Virgin Islands. The drawings air every Monday, Wednesday, and Saturday, live streamed on Powerball.com.
