The world’s largest camera, capable of capturing a 3200 megapixel image of the night sky, is set to unveil its first images on June 23 at the Vera Rubin Observatory in Chile. The massive lens, measuring 5 meters across, can see a golf ball from 15 miles away and will capture 1000 images per night over the next decade.
The camera’s mission is to catalog 20 billion galaxies, making it an unprecedented opportunity for astronomers to study the universe in unprecedented detail. On June 23, the Vera Rubin Observatory will host a live event showcasing large, ultra-high-definition images and videos of the camera’s capabilities.
Hundreds of venues worldwide will also be hosting watch parties featuring a public viewing of the live stream on YouTube and website. The first Look event promises to mark the beginning of a new era in astronomy and astrophysics.
