Record-Breaking Sydney Harbour Bridge March for Gaza Ceasefire

Over 100,000 people marched across the Sydney Harbour Bridge on Sunday, defying torrential rain to call for an end to the conflict in Gaza. The event was part of a growing global movement demanding a ceasefire, with organisers estimating up to 300,000 attendees.

The march, which took place under the watchful eye of police, began as planned despite a Supreme Court ruling on Saturday that allowed it to proceed. However, authorities temporarily halted the procession due to concerns over crowd safety, only for protesters to disperse and reassemble in large numbers.

A sea of rain-soaked faces snaked its way across the 1.2km bridge, with chants of “Free Palestine” echoing through the air. The event was marked by a display of solidarity from high-profile Australians, including Julian Assange and five NSW Labor MPs.

Despite the challenging weather conditions, spirits remained high among protesters, who waved homemade signs and clanged metal pots to draw attention to the ongoing humanitarian crisis in Gaza. The marchers’ determination was evident in their calls for politicians to take action, with one attendee stating, “Our politicians have to now listen to the will of the people and sanction Israel.”
