Record Cocoa Prices Hit Valentine’s Day Gift-Giving

The high cost of chocolates this Valentine’s Day may be more than just a sentimental gesture. A recent price surge in cocoa beans has made it one of the most expensive commodities on the market, affecting gift-givers and chocolate lovers alike.

The price increase, which began last year, has been unprecedented, with prices rising by 2 1/2 years. According to Philip de Selliers, head of the Belgian chocolate federation, the current price stands at over $10,000 per ton, up from less than $2,000 in summer 2022.

The spike is not expected to ease anytime soon, as experts say it’s been a long time since prices have been this high. “We’re seeing unprecedented prices,” says Bart Van Besien, policy adviser for Oxfam Fair Trade group.
